Blog 4: A Message From Our Art Lead

Hi!

I'm Lily and I'm the art lead for Herding Ghosts. So as we may have mentioned, we've redesigned our game as of semester 2. It's still a cute pixel art game about managing your tasks while being surrounded by adorable ghosts, but this change from a sort of strategy game taking place at an old cottage to a witch bakery sim has meant we're remaking the majority of the game's assets from scratch.

In the original game I went with a very cottagecore style with warm brown hues and greens, which is nice but was also artistically limiting. With the overhaul I decided on mixing in purples, teals and burgundy hues which adds more variety in the art we can produce. Steven and I are about halfway finished with the pixel art for the house where the game takes place. I've been doing the greenhouse, shopfront and living quarters while Steven makes the kitchen and pantry. We also came up with lists of ingredients and food items and divided the work of making the assets between us to get through it quicker.

I also updated the style guide to help with style matching. It's been a difficult task trying to deconstruct my methods so they are easier for others to follow and I still struggle with it, however thanks to Steven being so attentive in implementing my suggestions I think we'll manage quite well. Here's a snippet of our progress on the kitchen!

The original drawing was concepted and made in Aseprite by Steven and I've just been adding some touches to finish it off and make sure the house looks cohesive when put all together. Thank you for reading and I look forward to us being able to show the full game later this year
